This necklace features a vintage oval Belgian medal, c. 1958, on a gilt swivel crown suspension.  The central oval black enamel medallion bearing an imposed gilt beehive on crossed spade and hammer is bordered by red enamel, inscribed ‘HABILETE MORALITE’ and ‘BEKWAAMHEID ZEDELIJKHEID’ (Skill and Morality in French and Flemish languages) within a border of blue enamel laurel leaves, has a a silvered escutcheon above bearing the Belgian lion rampant, and with a belt and buckle below.  It dangles from a vintage, gold-plated watch chain c. 1930.

Origin Story

The medal is a Belgian labor long service medal originally established on November 7, 1847 under the name "Industrial and Agricultural Decoration."  The Labor Decoration is awarded to those who use their knowledge, talent and dedication in the pursuit of their work for a specified time. It was awarded by the Belgian Ministry of Employment and Labor post-World War II to 1958.
