    These earrings pair two very unusual vintage glass stones. The top stone is made of helio glass and changes colors depending on the light and angle.  Below it dangles a bi-colored, 13 x 8 mm teardrop stone in shades of blue sapphire and ruby, imported from West Germany in the 1950's.

    Origin Story

    The rhinestones feature a finish known as "aurora borealis," meant to simulate the iridescent effect of the Northern Lights.  Created by the Swarovski Company in the mid-1950's, this coating was extremely popular in costume jewelry through the 1960's.   

    The tassels on these earrings were likely used to embellish Albert-style watch chains of the period; this particular type of pocket watch chain was distinguished by an additional section of chain used for attaching a decorative item, such as a fob.

    The book chain necklace features links shaped like the bindings of books, and was a popular design during the Victorian era.  This necklace style re-emerged throughout the 20th century during various Victorian revival periods, particularly during the late 1930's and 40's.  It is a design that continues to evolve and inspire even in the 21st century.

    The glass buttons were produced circa 1910 in Northern Bohemia, a region in the north of the Czech Republic that – since the 14th century – has been renowned for its beautiful jewelry and button manufacture.  I purchased these beautiful amethyst buttons from a vendor in Prague.
